Jason McComas, 35, the father of 5-week-old Lizbeth McComas, stood outside Children's Hospital and told 9NEWS about his daughter's recovery.

McComas said his daughter was sedated, strapped down to a bed, with a brace around her neck all day long.

Shalimar McComas, 35 was driving home, after dropping off her husband for an early morning work shift in Parker and was on her way back home.

Their 5-week-old daughter, Lizbeth, was in the car with her mom - when police say they were rear-ended by a fast moving Jeep.

The crash happened just after 2 a.m. Monday near South Parker Road and East Lehigh Avenue.

Jason said he learned about what happened to his wife and daughter about two hours after the crash.

"When I got the call, I mean it was immediately tears and I was freaking out," Jason said. "We've been trying for 5 years to have a baby. So, I mean, this is our first one. We had lost one other. Before this she [Shalimar] had a miscarriage. So this is really tough for her."

Jason said his wife was treated and released from the hospital Monday.

She had cuts that needed stitches. Monday was supposed to be her first day back to work - after maternity leave.

McComas is still trying to process how and why this happened to his family.

"It's pretty scary, especially with something so fragile. You know, new [baby] and just brought into this world - and that you've been trying so hard to have," Jason said. "You know, I mean it's just really hard. You know, it's a special gift that was given to us because we didn't think we could have kids."

The driver of the Jeep, 21-year-old William Page III, was in a medically-induced coma Monday night.

Police say just before 2:15 a.m., the Jeep driven by Page was traveling northbound on South Parker Road. One witness claims the Jeep was traveling around 100 mph. Police say the Jeep got to Lehigh Avenue and reportedly rear-ended a Dodge Caliber, causing both vehicles to rollover.

Shalimar and Lizbeth were in the Caliber at the time of the crash. Page was ejected from the Jeep and was taken to an area hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The baby was strapped into a car seat at the time of the wreck. After the Dodge came to a stop at the bottom of an embankment, Shalimar got out of the car and pulled Lizbeth to safety.

After the accident happened, all northbound lanes of South Parker Road were closed from East East Quincy Avenue to East Lehigh Avenue for hours. Southbound South Parker Road was down to one lane while police investigated.
