It happened when the SUV was exiting Westbound C-470 at Broadway just before noon Tuesday.

Troopers say the driver, 74-year-old Thomas Garrity of Bellevue, Neb., lost control of the car and hit the workers inside the work zone. The car also hit a Honda Pilot.

The Colorado State Patrol says 47-year-old Joseph Schwartz of Morrison and 27-year-old Jesus Villalobos of Brighton were killed in the incident.

Broadway was closed for several hours in both directions under C-470.

The driver of the SUV and his 72-year-old passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

There are reports the two people were working for the Colorado Department of Transportation, however CDOT spokesperson Stacey Stegman says they were not CDOT workers. Stegman says the workers were with Concrete Works of Colorado.

There was already construction on the median on Broadway at the time of the crash.
