Even though Amendment 64 passed, Douglas County commissioners say voters there have repeatedly voted against marijuana amendments and initiatives in recent years.

Amendment 64 includes a clause that allows local municipalities and governments to opt out.

Douglas County commissioners say they're confident residents don't want to see marijuana legalized.

"Douglas County citizens have voted four times on issues related to marijuana and all four cases they've voted against it," Commission Chairman Jack Hilbert said. "There are no medical marijuana dispensaries in Douglas County, so I think we know what our citizens want.

The ordinance passed its initial reading and will have its final reading on Dec. 18. It will only affect unincorporated Douglas County.

Cities such as Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Parker would set their own rules.
