Dr. Payson Sheets has studied the Mayans since the 1960s and says there's nothing in their ancient scriptures that talks about the end of the world.
"The Mayan never predicted a disaster," Dr. Sheets said.
Sheets travels to Central America at least once a year. His Mayan friends are still puzzled why some Americans would even think the world would end on Friday.
"They find it funny," Sheets said.
Sheets says the Mayan calendar will end on Friday, but a new one will begin on Saturday. It's called a "Baktun," which is basically like the start of a new millennium.
No one's quite sure where the rumor came from, but it's believed to have been started in U.S.
