At 4:13 a.m., firefighters responded to the fire on the 1000 block of Village Drive. Heavy smoke combined with stream produced from the frigid temperatures made it difficult for crews to find the trapped parties. A frozen fire hydrant and other frozen fire equipment presented even more trouble to crews.

The woman trapped on the roof of the two-story home was forced to jump, falling 10 to 12 feet. She was transported to a local hospital with a hip injury.

Due to the heavy smoke and steam, a man trapped on an upper balcony had to yell and make loud noises to alert firefighters to his location. As they searched for him, the man was able to jump on a ladder put up by rescuers. The visibility conditions were so poor that the firefighter climbing up the ladder only realized the trapped party was on it after he had climbed three-fourths of the way up.

The couple's two children were found outside the home.

Several animals died in the fire. Crews managed to rescue one cat.

Authorities say the house is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
