GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - A Mesa County child care official says neighbors and friends should have reported their concerns about possible child neglect before two children died after their mother left them alone in a vehicle.
Department of Social Services director Tracey Garchar says child deaths could be prevented if people would get involved.
An aunt and several neighbors say they knew the children were being neglected and should have reported it.
Heather Jensen is accused of child abuse resulting in death, criminally negligent homicide and false reporting to authorities.
Coroner's officials have said 2-year-old William Jensen and 4-year-old Tyler Jensen died of hyperthermia, or overheating.
William died at the scene Nov. 27.
Tyler died later at a hospital. According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, Jensen has not commented on the allegations.
