DENVER - Police are investigating what started as a fight that ended with six people stabbed outside a southwest Denver nightclub.

Witnesses describe chaos in the parking lot of the Monte Carlo bar and grill on the 2100 block of South Sheridan around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Denver police spokesman Lt. Matt Murray says the fight happened in the bar's parking lot around closing time.

Joe, a witness who asked 9NEWS to conceal his identity, says he saw several people fighting as he and his friends were leaving the nightclub.

"When we got out, there was a lot of people fighting. We were in the truck already and they were fighting. It was like five, six, seven guys against like three of them," Joe said.

It quickly became clear the fight was serious.

"At first we thought they were just fighting so fighting is not so scary but when we saw them laying on the ground it was," Joe said.

Murray says one of the victims was badly hurt and was in critical but stable condition Saturday afternoon.

The other five victims are stable and at least one has already been released from the hospital.

"Clearly what looked like a fight turned into something much worse," Murray said.

Officers arrested 21-year-old Jose Centenio and 25-year-old Jose Vasquez.

"What we do know is there were two different groups that got into a fight. Don't really know the details of all that yet. But unfortunately it escalated to the point where we have all these people going to the hospital," Murray said.

Murray says a check of Denver police records shows a few minor incidents at the Monte Carlo but no history of major problems.

He says the nightclub hires off duty DPD officers for security.

"When you're in there, nothing is going to happen because of security. But when you come out, that's when it's scary," Joe said.

Denver police say they do not suspect this fight was connected to gang activity.

Detectives will continue working this case throughout the weekend.
