STEAMBOAT SPRINGS - Thursday marks the one year out point for when the 2014 Winter Olympics will get under way in Sochi, Russia.

All roads to the Winter Games typically run through Colorado and places like Steamboat Springs.

Before the games, they hold sending off parties in the mountain town. Around 5,000 well wishers and Olympic athletes usually show up and have their own opening ceremony.

Steamboat has ties to more than 80 Olympians.

While the venues in Sochi are still under construction, athletes are perfecting their form and speed on the snow and spending hard hours in the gym.

The steep slopes of Steamboat Springs may seem a long way from the mountain ranges of Russia but for US Freestyle skier Eliza Outtrim the two are getting closer by the day.

'It's hard not to think about Sochi," Outtrim said. "I try to focus on the now but you are always focused on things that you can do now for long term improvement. So every day I get up to go to the gym. It isn't just for today or tomorrow but for a year from now."

Olympic champion and U.S Snowboarder Hannah Teter is thinking of what she needs to do to stand out in Sochi.

"Sochi is in the back of my mind, because once it's about a year out the qualifiers are coming and at a year it starts to get in your head," Teter said.
