DENVER - A 2-year-old girl shot by her mother last week is awake and out of a coma.

9NEWS partners at the Denver Post report that Isabel Perez's condition remains critical but has improved.

That information is coming from the girl's aunt who confirms that Isabel is no longer comatose.

Last Wednesday, Police say Mayra Perez shot and killed her other two children, 6-year-old Neveah Morales and 1-year-old Erick Perez, at their home in northeast Denver.

She then took her own life.

Family members are still struggling to understand what happened.
