DENVER - The word 'miracle' was used several times Friday by doctors at Denver Health.  They updated the media on the condition of 3-year-old Isabel Perez, who police say was shot by her mother on Feb. 7.

"Isabel is doing extremely well given the severity of her injury," her neurosurgeon Dr. Ken Winston said.

Still he stresses that her recovery process will take years.

Isabel is the lone survivor of her mother's murder-suicide. Police say, Mayra Nunez shot and killed two of her other children, 6-year-old Neveah Morales and 1-year-old Erick Perez, at their home in northeast Denver. She then took her own life.

An ICU pediatrician Dr. Margaret Clarke says it's always hard to see this happen to a child, but their pediatric team is trained to handle this type of case.

"It's what we do on a daily basis, and we are just happy and pleased to provide that to her," Clarke said.

Doctors say Isabel will be leaving Denver Health soon. She will be transferred to another hospital where she'll begin that long road of rehabilitation.

"She's just been an absolutely wonderful miracle to work with," Clarke said. "Over the past week, she's been gaining in interaction and playfulness."

Just two weeks after the shooting, "Bella" is moving her right side. She's talking a little bit. And, doctors say she is getting feisty to deal with, which is a good sign.

Dr. Clarke read this statement from the hearts of Isabel's family:

"Our family has been deeply touched by the support we've received from Colorado, the nation, and the world. From the family in Colorado Springs who sent us pizza in the hospital to eat to the prayers and letters we've received from as far as Peru. Our family is grateful for the kind prayers and thoughts we've felt from the community. We also want to express our deepest appreciation to the community in El Paso, TX. Their fundraising efforts, prayers, and support have meant the world to us. As Isabel prepares to leave Denver Health for the next step in her healing we are grateful to the paramedics, Doctors and nurses who have cared for her and us during this difficult time. Isabel is a miracle. She's a testament of strength and resilience our children can show during adversity and tragedy. Thank you again for your support and prayers."
