INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Denver's Vice President of Football Operations can scour over the nation's most promising NFL players to-be all he wants. He can examine film, test their raw abilities and interview every single player.

Still, Elway won't find what he's looking for.

What the Broncos need, according to Elway, isn't embodied in a singular player. He's searching for the right combination of players, some coming from this draft class that can help win the Lombardi Trophy.

"Thirteen-and-three is not good enough," asserted Elway Friday in Indianapolis. "It was nice, we won the division and had home field [advantage], but when you lose in the first round in the playoffs, you know you have to get better, whether it be better playing not only in the regular season, but we have to learn how to play in the postseason."

Denver may have been the best team in the league, closing out the regular season with eleven consecutive wins and tying for the best record in the NFL. Yet, they didn't win the Super Bowl and thus the season fails to be a complete success.

Whomever the Broncos decide to draft in the coming months, and likely it will be a player that impresses Elway this weekend, is just another part of his bigger plan. Their objective this offseason is to improve, but the difference between where they are and where they want to be isn't all that large.

"I would say this: I feel much better standing here now than I did two years ago about where we are as a football team," said Elway. The Broncos possess the No. 28 pick in the first round of the draft. "I think that the way I look at it is that we have to continue to get better because everyone else in this league is going to get better."

Denver is set at quarterback. They don't need another speed rusher nor a go-to wide receiver.

The Broncos will likely select a defensive lineman or a middle linebacker, even possibly Manti Te'o. Elway said their defense was forced into the 'nickel' scheme because of their deficiencies.

"I'm hopeful. We've got a good football team, so we think that we'll continue to build on that and see what happens," said Elway.
