HIGHLANDS RANCH - When you think of really fun teachers you've had, does your math teacher come to mind? It probably does if you've ever been in Mandi Zimmerman's class at Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch.
Mrs. Zimmerman uses humor, games and social media to make a really hard class fun, or at least less painful. Dealing with X's, Y's, sines and cosines all day is enough to make your head explode. Yet many of her students say they enjoy the class. Mrs. Zimmerman says she enjoys it as much as they do. "I love messing around with High School kids all day. It's so much fun and they are so funny. They keep me entertained."
Mrs. Zimmerman not only teaches math classes, she's the former basketball and volleyball coach, and is a sponsor for Student Council. She says being a good teacher is all about forming relationships with the students. "Once you show them you care", she says, "they will bend over backwards to show you they care too."
Her classes include all kinds of kids. Some are a math wiz. Others struggle, some simply hate math. But they all like her, so they give it their best. She tries to open their eyes to the subject matter by working one on one with each student. Student Bayleigh Arey told us, "It's hard, not a lot of people like it. But she makes it fun, which is awesome. I never dread math class with her".
It's why Mandi Zimmerman is our 9Teachers Who Care winner.
