DENVER - Public works are investigating how a four-foot hole appeared in the pavement of a Highlands neighborhood street.
The hole appeared Wednesday or Thursday in a Denver neighborhood near Highlands Park, at West Fairview Place and Grove Street.
Spokesperson Emily Williams with the City of Denver's Public Works Department says it's unlikely this particular hole is a sinkhole like those recently discovered in Florida, but rather a weak area of asphalt that was not patched properly after utility work.
Regardless, public works will investigate what caused the hole to form and determine if any damage was caused to underlying sewer or drain systems Monday.
In the meantime, the city has put up safety barriers around the 'sinkhole' which has closed a portion of the road.
Williams says they do not anticipate the hole growing in size over the weekend.
