DENVER- When the Broncos were finally on the clock, some three hours into the 2013 NFL Draft, they were surprised to see Sylvester Williams still on their big board.
"We're fortunate," Broncos Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said. "You never know how it's going to fall, with the anticipation of waiting all day to see when we get to our pick and what's going to be left on the board. It fell perfect for us."
No matter how many mock drafts in the days, and long nights, leading up to this most crucial of days for football franchises, Elway and company couldn't have foreseen the big defensive tackle falling all the way to No. 28. They were seemingly too auspicious of circumstances, but the Broncos certainly going to complain. They were happy to snatch the North Carolina prospect right up.
"We didn't think he would get to us. The whole week we didn't think he would get to us so we're thrilled," said Elway. "He's a guy that's athletic, big and strong inside. We've been looking for defensive tackles for a long time. It's been a need for us for a long time. He'll be a great anchor for us on the inside."
The 6 foot-3 inch, 313-pound heart of a defense is now a Denver Bronco, how it happened is now a thing of the past.
