KUSA - The La Plata County Sheriff's Office says that human remains sent to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for tests have been identified as missing Dylan Redwine. The family has been notified.
The case is being pursued as a criminal investigation.
Investigators say they found several items during a five-day search in the Vallecito area, near where Dylan Redwine went missing. They said several items were taken from the site including human remains.
The remains of Dylan Redwine were found about 10 miles away from his father's house.
Dylan Redwine's father, Mark Redwine, arrived at the La Plata County Sheriff's Office Thursday morning to be briefed about the discoveries.
Redwine's mother, Elaine Redwine, had been briefed earlier this week.
Officials say the family has been very cooperative during the investigation. Durango police Lt. Ray Shupe said, "The parents are obviously devastated."
The search started Saturday and wrapped up late Wednesday evening. Investigators, along with volunteers, spent the last week searching a 12 mile stretch of Middle Mountain near Vallecito. The La Plata County Sheriff's Office says the search was not based on any recent tips nor new information.
SLIDESHOW: Search for Dylan Redwine
Middle Mountain is a heavily forested area with very steep drainages. It's about 11,000 feet in elevation. Back in November and in December, investigators searched parts of the mountain before its roads were closed during the winter months.
Search teams negotiated steep drainages with extensive ground cover as they looked for clues. Sectors were treated as possible crime scenes. At times the searchers were almost shoulder to shoulder as they moved up and down the difficult terrain.
District Attorney Todd Risberg said it was too early to say whether charges might be filed. No suspects or persons of interest have been named.
Dylan lived in the Monument area with his mother, Elaine Redwine, but arrived in La Plata County on Nov. 18 for a court-ordered visit in Vallecito with his father.
The father says he returned home from running errands Nov. 19 to find Dylan was gone.
