KUSA - The grandson of a Weld County commissioner suffered "serious bodily injury" after an ATV accident in Jefferson County Saturday, according to Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The incident is being investigated as felony child abuse, according to Jacki Kelley with Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Weld County commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer's 3-year-old grandson suffered serious injuries at a family gathering Saturday afternoon.
Police say they didn't find out about what happened until about midnight Saturday, when someone from Children's Hospital called them.
Commissioner Kirkmeyer released this statement to 9NEWS Sunday afternoon:
"On Saturday afternoon, my grandson was injured in an accident involving an ATV at a family residence. Following the accident, it appeared at first that he needed stitches for a cut he received to his head. I immediately took him to Children's Hospital where he is receiving care for what we now know is a head injury. Soon after arriving at the hospital, family members, including myself, spoke with Sheriff's deputies and Social Services. All family members are cooperating with these agencies and are rallying around my grandson as he receives care for his injury. This was a horrible accident, and we appreciate your thoughts and prayers for speedy recovery."
