KUSA- Katie and Caleb Medley will celebrate their son's first birthday on Wednesday.
The couple was inside the movie theater in Aurora on July 20, 2012 when shots were fired.
Katie was pregnant. Caleb was shot in the head.
4 days later, as Caleb was in a medical induced coma, Katie gave birth to Hugo, their first child.
Katie Medley told the Canyon City Daily Record they're thankful Caleb is alive.
"We just try to remind ourselves to be thankful that Caleb is alive and getting better and that we have a healthy baby who just started walking," she told the paper. "We would all be lying if we said it hasn't been tough, but it's been worth it."
Caleb, who is 24, is unable to walk or talk right now. He communicates through shaking his head.
"I feel like we focus so much on life and what's really going on now that there's no time to (think about it)," she told the Canyon City Daily Record. "We try hard to just focus on now and what we are doing today and what is going on with our family. It's much easier and much more pleasant to focus on our family. Our focus is just on getting Caleb better."
Katie, Caleb and Hugo moved back to Fremont County from the Denver area to be closer to family in January, just one day before Caleb's 24th birthday.
