DENVER - A man suspected of killing a woman and wounding another is in the hospital after being shot by Denver police after he fired at a propane tank he was carrying.

Police have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Daniel Abeyta.

It happened in the 2200 block of South Irving Street in southwest Denver Friday morning.

According to police on the scene, Abeyta was holding a "long gun" in the middle of West Evans Avenue near South Irving Street. When police arrived on the scene,  Abeyta shot at small propane tanks that he placed in the middle of the street. One tank blew up; the other did not. The propane tanks, according to police, had gun powder on them.

"The first cop drove up. He jumped out, and he told the other cop to 'grab a long rifle,'" neighborhood resident Henry Frye said.

At 12:15 p.m., police said there are other "incendiary" devices in the area of the shooting. They evacuated the block and encouraged residents to stay indoors as they try and locate all the devices. Police did discover a hand grenade near the scene.

"All the sudden thousands of cops pulled up," neighbor Joe McConkui said. "Officers realized they had to act quickly to diffuse the danger."

Police said Abeyta called police and said he wanted to get in a shootout with them.

Denver Police tweeted at 11:16 a.m. that the shooter was "down." Abeyta was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

After the suspect was shot, police went to the home where the shooting took place and found one woman dead. Another woman was found wounded in second home. The injured woman was taken to the hospital. She remains in serious condition.

No police were injured during this incident.

Authorities said the area was secure at 11:29 a.m. The case is being investigated as an officer-involved shooting.

Police say Abeyta is facing first-degree murder charges.
