FREDERICK - A 3-year-old Frederick boy who died from an apparent gunshot wound was identified Tuesday.

The Weld County coroner says Sheine Steine died from an accidental gunshot wound to the head.

"We have no reason to believe this was other than an accidental firing of the gun while the child handled it," Frederick Police Chief Gary Barbour said in a statement.

Barbour told 9NEWS that his mother, Dione Warren, called 911 before 10 a.m. Monday morning. She told the operator she believed her child had fallen and struck his head on the bedside table.

"Near the child was a handgun," Barbour said. "It also appeared with a little bit of inspection the handgun had been fired."

The child was taken to the hospital. Police later sent information that he had died.

Police said the boy was found in the parent's upstairs bedroom. The bullet, police said, ricocheted off the wall and was found in the bed.

"It was a very severe trauma to the skull that's been described to me as producing a lot of blood. So, the injury was not very clear to the officers who observed it," Barbour said.

The gun was owned by the boy's stepfather, Jeremy McCollem.

No one has been charged or taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing.
