KUSA- As a 36-year-old mom of two, Eva Berninzoni never imagined herself getting back into a bikini. So it was beyond her wildest dreams that she would not only wear a bikini again, but look so good in that bikini that she would win an award.
"I did?" she asked in shock when her trainer, Chris Williamson of The Gym, told her that she'd placed in the top five of the master's bikini competition division of the Warrior Classic Professional Bodybuilding and Physique Show.
Only months earlier, Berninzoni was a tired mom who was afraid to take time for herself. Victoria Perkins felt the same way. She'd just had her first child and was feeling like she'd never get back into shape.
"I just felt low," she said. "I felt tired doing nothing."
After seven months of training with Williamson, exercising six days a week and eating a clean diet, Berninzoni and Perkins lost a combined total of more than 75 pounds.
"It's not about making people skinny. It's about getting them the confidence to go out in the world and conquer things in this life that they may encounter," Williamson said.
He incorporated weight training in the moms' routines. He also had them eat every two to three hours. All of them meals contained lean protein , healthy fats and healthy carbohydrates. He said that women shouldn't be afraid to build muscle as they try to lose weight.
"That muscle will help you stay leaner. For every pound of lean muscle mass you have, your body's going to burn an extra 50 calories," he said.
Williamson should know, he's helped local moms lose weight for three years in the 9NEWS Bikini Body After Baby series. Those moms agree, at the end of their journey, to compete in a professional bikini and physique competition, such as the Warrior Classic.
"To get over that hump and just know that you accomplish so much more and your body can really do things that your mind doesn't think you can," said Perkins, as she reflected on her accomplishments.
The moms say they feel stronger and more energetic for their families.
"I'm excited to just live a fun life," Bernonzoni said.
