LAKEWOOD - A dangerous road rage situation quickly escalated when the victim of an alleged hit-and-run took matters into his own hands.
Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, Lakewood Police say Kenneth Ruggieri, 22, rear-ended a car off of South Wadsworth Boulevard and West Girton Avenue in Lakewood. The victim, Paul Jones, pulled over and Ruggieri reportedly sped off. Jones' car had minor damage.
Jones says he chased him all the way to Ruggieri's home because he smelled alcohol on Ruggieri and knew the situation could become worse. Both men got out of their cars in the apartment parking lot. Police say the passenger in Ruggieri's car started to fight with Jones. During the fight, Ruggieri allegedly grabbed a handgun from his home and shot at Jones saying "I'm going to f-ing kill you."
Jones' wife and his 10-year-old son were in the car at the time of the shooting. Jones ran away after Ruggieri reportedly fired shots and flagged down a police officer.
Police arrested Ruggieri and will face charges of attempted murder, DUI, leaving the scene of the accident and hit-and-run.
Police want to remind drivers to never take matters into their own hands because you don't know who you're dealing with.
