KUSA - KUSA - A Colorado Springs mother is accused of drowning her 5-year-old son in a custody battle.
Shortly after Colorado Springs firefighters extinguished a fire inside apartment 203 of the Hill Park Apartments, newly-released court records suggest they came across the body of a five-year-old boy "wrapped in a blanket" and "between a bed and a wall."
The police report goes on to say that one firefighter "unwrapped the child from the blanket and took him outside" before another firefighter "performed chest compressions" on the boy.
Inside the apartment, police say they found the boy's mother "in the hall closet." She was "naked, wet and... sitting up with her arms wrapped around her knees." That mother, 42-year old Shannon Dodson, now faces a first-degree murder charge for her role in the death of her son Jude Murray-Gomez.
She is expected to make an appearance in an El Paso County courtroom on Wednesday. Police believe the boy died not because of the fire, but as a result of drowning.
While a motive remains unclear, the boy's family on his father's side believes Dodson was simply reluctant to lose her son who had been the subject of a prolonged custody battle. Jillian Gomez, the boy's paternal grandmother, had been granted full custody rights and a visitation schedule was set up by the courts in October of this year.
The newly-released court documents also reveal that police say Dodson confessed to killing her son after being taken into custody. She said "she shouldn't have done it and she didn't know why she did it," according to the report.
