KUSA- 9Wants to Know who killed 21-year-old Quentin Smith outside a late-night house party nearly three years ago.
Quentin Smith's mom, Stacie Bates-Powell, remembers how 500 mourners attended her son's funeral.
"The funeral home had not had a funeral that big in their history," she said. "Standing room only. Some people would just say that was the big guy with all that hair."
Nearly seven feet tall and weighing 320 pounds, Smith towered above most family and friends. It made him unmistakable. It also made him an easy target, even in the one a.m. darkness on January 22, 2011. Smith stepped outside a house party at 3385 Pontiac Street to say goodbye to a friend.
Within seconds of that friend driving away, a wave of bullets came at Quentin. His mom calls the shooting an ambush. Denver Police Detective Martin Vigil believes there could be multiple shooters and multiple guns involved in the killing.
"The amount of rounds that were shot into Quentin shows that someone was pretty angry," said Det. Vigil.
Some rounds crashed through the home's front window, causing the 20 people at the party to dive for cover. One witness remembers a mid-sized brown car driving down the street.
Det. Vigil, who has worked this case since the first night, is not sure the car was connected. He does have a possible motive: retaliation for an old disagreement Quentin had with several guys.
"There is a lot of rumor going around on this case - on who may have committed it," Det. Vigil said.
He adds he still wants to find and talk to several people, including some who left the party before police arrived.
"At the end to the day, some of you guys are walking around with the guys who did this to him and you don't even know it, or maybe you do," said Smith's mom.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to $2000 for information leading to an arrest in the murder of Quentin Smith. If you have any information about the murder, call Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-STOP or call Det. Vigil at (720) 913-6099.
