LIMON- Ice-cold temperatures along the Eastern Plains made it extra difficult for four fire departments to battle a church fire in Limon overnight Sunday.

The fire appears to be an accident.

The fire at the Church of Christ started around 11:30 Saturday evening. An explosion forced flames to burst in to the sky. Firefighters believe the fire started near a heater inside the church.

Overnight, the temperature was -5. Firefighters had a difficult time moving around because the parking lot of the church was caked in ice.

On top of that, water from the fire hydrant sprayed on their gear, forcing it to freeze on them.

"All of our bunker gear was frozen from the water all over. It splashed. Biggest thing was the ice out here, trying to walk out here and dragging hoses," said Limon Assistant Fire Chief Ian Christie.

The church is a complete loss. It's unclear what the congregation is going to do moving forward.
