COLORADO SPRINGS - Police say a 14-year-old girl was shot and killed by her step-father Monday morning after being mistaken for a burglar.
It happened just before 6 a.m. in the northwest part of Colorado Springs on Ascendant Drive, near North Carefree Circle and Peterson Road.
Police say the homeowner initially reported a burglary, saying he had shot the suspect.
Scanner traffic indicates that in the next few minutes, the family realized it was the girl.
"[Reporting party] is saying he shot his daughter. That she was coming through a window," said a dispatcher. "Patient is a 14-year-old female who is unconscious and breathing. Shot in stomach and chest."
Police say the teen died at the hospital later in the morning.
Neighbor Megan Harvey said her mom was up wrapping Christmas presents when she heard the gunshots.
"She heard three gunshots and the police sirens," Harvey said. "I just can't believe this happened. It's heartbreaking."
The crime tape and police cars stood out on the quiet street as police spent about nine hours at the home. By about 3:30 p.m., investigators had left. No arrests have been made and no names released.
"There's been no determination of whether or not there will be any charges filed," said CSPD spokesperson Larry Herbert. "That's going to be determined by the district attorney's office."
For now, minds and hearts are with a family broken two days before Christmas.
"Pray for her family," said Harvey. "That's all I can really think of. They need the prayers."
