COMMERCE CITY - Police found multiple dead and malnourished animals, including dogs, inside a Commerce City townhome Wednesday.

Officers removed twelve animals, ten of which were deceased, from the complex in 6000 block of Jasmine Court, near Vasquez Boulevard.

The two animals that were alive were taken to the Adams County Animal Shelter for treatment. The animals ranged in species from rodents and birds to cats and dogs.

The smell is what prompted a woman to call a maintenance worker Wednesday morning.

Julie Aragon says the last time she saw her neighbor was before Christmas.

After she heard a cat crying in the basement and then smelled something horrible, she knew something was wrong.

Aragon says she has never noticed anything strange about the woman. As far as she knew, the animals were well cared for.

The resident and owner of the animals was contacted at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said. No arrests have been made at this time.
