Men's Alpine Downhill did not turn out as many had expected Sunday. American ski star Bode Miller finished eighth.

Austria's Matthias Mayer took gold.

Miller started as one of the fastest towards the top of the race, but he slowed in the middle and ranked seventh in the third interval and 23rd in the fourth interval of the race.

Miller got bronze in this event in the 2010 Olympic Games and has five medals overall from previous Olympics.

Miller will get another shot to grab his sixth Olympic medal this Friday in the Men's Super Combined. He took gold in that event in 2010.

Team USA grabbed a gold Sunday in Women's Slopestyle Snowboarding.

Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., came into the event as a gold-medal favorite because of her performance over the past three years. She has finished in first or second place in 20 of the 24 events that she has entered.

In Sunday's competition in Sochi, Anderson landed two 720s in her second run earning her enough points to be guaranteed a medal with two riders to go. Both remaining riders fell on their final runs giving Anderson the gold.

Russia earned its first gold medal of the Sochi Olympics on Sunday in team figure skating. Americans took bronze.

Team USA made a strong comeback in this event after a rough start during Thursday's team figure skating competition.

Performances Sunday by Gracie Gold and Jason Brown, who lives and trains in Monument, Colo., brought up the team's total points. Strong performances on Saturday from the team also contributed to the points for bronze.
