KUSA - It's win No. 1 on the season - and more importantly it's win No. 1 in program history for the University of Colorado women's lacrosse team.
Freshman Cali Castagnola scored the first three goals of the game as the Buffs rolled to the win over the Stetson Hatter 12-4 Thursday night in DeLand, Florida.
"It's extremely exciting for us to build a program here at Colorado from the ground up," head coach Anne Elliott said. She makes the transition from being an assistant coach at Northwestern where she also played and won 3 National Championships.
"We have a lot of energy going into and we're just looking forward to going out and competing for the first time," she continued.
On the inaugural roster there are 21 freshman and just two sophomores. But while the players lack experience at the collegiate level - although Kelly did land four All-American recruits - they make up for in the appetite to take on the demands that come with building a program.
"The kids that we want in our program are the ones that aren't afraid of challenges, the ones that find it as a great opportunity to do something different," asserted Elliott.
The university officially added women's lacrosse a year ago and Buffs will play their first home game at Folsom Field on February 22.
