KUSA - Many people will stretch the holiday weekend and take off early Friday for the final hurrah of summer.

The Colorado Department of Transportation was expecting heavier than normal traffic to start Thursday.

Rain on I-70 Thursday evening from Idaho Springs to the Eisenhower Tunnel may have prompted a few to postpone leaving out until Friday.

Based on past Labor Days, 45,000 vehicles will travel through the Eisenhower and Johnson tunnels each day through the weekend.

Mountain Express lanes will be open for the trip back home. CDOT also plans metering at the tunnel.

At Rocky Mountain National Park, the two first come-first served campsites will likely fill up by Friday and parking lots will probably do the same.

Park rangers have this advice: those who want to hike Bear Lake should get there before 10, leave the vehicle in Estes Park and take the hiker shuttle.
