LAKEWOOD - Two people were taken to the hospital after an overnight fire in Lakewood, including a 5-year-old girl who was rescued from the burning home.

West Metro Fire Rescue officials say the fire started just after midnight Friday in the 9900 block of Vassar Way. Investigators say two parents and two children were home when the fire started.

Three of the four family members made it out of the home without assistance. Firefighters found the 5-year-old hiding in an upstairs closet. She and her father were taken to a local hospital.

A working smoke detector was found on the first floor of the home. Investigators say it is possible there was also one on the second floor, but it’s not immediately clear because of the damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is believed to have started on or near a back deck.
