Colorado NASCAR fans can't contain their excitement after Truex victory

WESTMINSTER - Colorado NASCAR fans broke out in cheers (and some tears) Sunday afternoon when Martin Truex, Jr. captured his first NASCAR Cup championship.

People started filing into Quaker Steak and Lube in Westminster around 10 a.m. -- three hours before the race even started -- to secure a good view of the TVs. Shortly after, fans could already be heard shouting, "Bring home the Cup!"

Everyone seemed to trade in their Sunday bests for shirts and jerseys of their favorite drivers. As you can imagine, most people sported Truex's number -- 78.

The race started out a little rocky and some fans cringed as they watched Truex temporarily stuck in fourth place. However, other fans remained confident that would all change as the race continued. Of course, they were later proven right.

Cheers erupted in the restaurant and hardly anyone remained seated as Truex started on his last of ten laps. The noise only grew louder as the lap count dropped and peaked as Truex crossed the line in first place.

"Denver has the NASCAR Championship!" Keith Dochterman shouted moments after the win. "Oh my goodness! Furniture Row did it! Martin Truex did it!"

Other fans told 9NEWS they couldn't find the right words to describe their excitement while some simply told us they "had goosebumps."

Fans are already telling 9NEWS the City of Denver should honor Furniture Row Racing in some way.
