Hundreds line up for Shred-A-Thon

Hundreds of people came out to Shred-A-Thon, which is also a fundraiser for Crime Stoppers

KUSA – The 9NEWS Shred-it Shred-A-Thon benefiting Crimestoppers once again saw hundreds of people line up across the metro Denver area to safely dispose of their sensitive documents.

Some of you either saved or didn’t shred for years, bringing the big stuff for us to shred - and we love it.

Kent, who came to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office location, says he brought 12 years-worth of documents. It’s not that he’s been collecting documents for that long. He says they’ve just “been there.”

“Time to get rid of it,” he told 9NEWS.

Troy Moran said he had 5 years-worth of documents to shred.

“It’s nice to finally get rid of all those documents,” he said.

9NEWS talks about identity theft a lot and shredding documents is one way to protect yourself.

“All of us accumulate stuff at home and ultimately if it goes out to the trash, there’s crooks that will be out there dumpster diving,” said Arapahoe County Sheriff Dave Walcher.

Many locations, especially early in the morning, were busy.

The Westminster Police Department said for years, it’s been the busiest location.

“All but one year we’ve been the number one donations collector,” said spokesperson for the Police Department, Cheri Spotke. “Two years ago we lost by roughly $25 to Arapahoe County.”

Shred-A-Thon raises money for Crimestoppers. 9NEWS will update the total amount raised to benefit the non-profit as soon as the dollars are tallied up.

This year, Shred-A-Thon raised $88,000 total for Crimestoppers. By site, the breakdown is:

  • Westminster - $21,316
  • Arapahoe County Sheriff - $20,395.50
  • Jefferson County - $18,200
  • 9News - $12,950
  • Aurora Police - $10,129
  • Shred-it - $4,221

Crimestoppers takes anonymous tips and pays a reward if your information leads to an arrest. You can always call in a tip at 720-913-STOP.
