3 cars lit on fire in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS - Colorado Springs Police have launched a criminal investigation after vandals attempted to light nine cars and a gas station pump on fire early Tuesday morning. Three cars were successfully ignited and totaled by fire.

Officers were first called to the 2900 block of Tremont St. at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday where they found two cars had been set on fire.

Around 4:00 a.m. police were dispatched to another vehicle fire near Cragmor Rd. and Mallow Rd.

Police were then called at 4:13 a.m. to a gas station in the 2100 block of Templeton Gap Rd. for a gas pump that had been lit on fire.

Colorado Springs Police say they discovered six other cars that the suspects had attempted to light on fire.

The preliminary investigation has determined the suspects placed an unknown item in the gas tank of the vehicles in an attempt to ignite the gas tanks.

The Colorado Springs Police Department and Colorado Springs Fire Department are working together on the criminal investigation.
