Child shoots toddler with unattended gun

PUEBLO - Pueblo police say a 3-year-old girl was accidentally shot by a 5-year-old who was playing with a gun left unattended by the mom's boyfriend.

The child was shot once and the bullet entered and exited without breaking any bones. The child underwent surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition.

It happened after 10 a.m. in the 3200 block of Colfax Avenue in Pueblo. According to police, a 9-year-old was in the backyard of the Colfax home with the other children and was able to manipulate the gun. The gun was then handled by a 5-year-old who pointed it at the 3-year-old and pulled the trigger.

When the 9-year-old was asked how he was able to manipulate the handgun, he said he learned it from video games like Black Ops, according to a police.

The victim's mother and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Adrian Chavez, were both home at the time of the shooting. Police say Chavez fled the scene before police arrived. He was later picked up for a no bond warrant for failure to appear.

Police say Chavez is facing charges of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
