Denver Police chief chases armed suspect on foot

DENVER – Denver's chief of police, Robert White, apprehended a man Tuesday afternoon after seeing him threaten people with a knife, according to police.

"The chief saw a man chasing people with a knife", said Daelene Mix, public information officer for Denver's Department of Public Safety office. Mix says when the chief stopped his car the man with the knife took off running.

Mix says the chief made sure the witnesses were safe and then ran after the suspect. The chief chased the man until he ran up against a fence. He then pulled out his gun and demanded the suspect drop his knife, according to Mix.

The man dropped the knife and White took the man into custody.

Mix says the chief was returning to headquarters after visiting the scene of an officer involved shooting near 33rd Avenue and High Street Tuesday afternoon when he saw the man with the knife.

9NEWS has learned the man was taken to detox and is not currently facing charges.
