EAGLE COUNTY - The Eagle County father authorities say was killed by his 13-year-old son died from two gunshot wounds to the head, according to the Eagle County Coroner's Office.
The body of 50-year-old Joseph Kelly Jr. was discovered at his Gypsum home he shared with his son Monday morning. The Eagle County coroner says that Kelly had been dead for at least six days and his body was decomposing.
Kelly's 13-year-old son, who was at the home when deputies arrived to perform a wellness check, was arrested Monday in connection with his murder. The teen answered the door and told deputies that his father was dead in the home.
Eagle County Sheriff's investigators became suspicious after Kelly failed to show up to a meeting with deputies last Thursday to discuss his son's possible involvement in a graffiti incident.
Early Monday morning, Kelly's employer - Eagle County Public Works - contacted the Eagle County Sheriff's Office to say the son had called in several days in a row, stating that his father was ill and would not be at work.
A motive is still under investigation.
The teen was taken into custody and transported to Mount View Youth Detentions Facility on charges of first degree murder.
