Man accused of killing cousin pleads not guilty

JEFFERSON COUNTY - The man charged in the death of his 2-year-old cousin pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in February.

Roman Morales, 21, was ordered to undergo an evaluation at the Colorado Mental Health Institute.

His case will be reviewed May 20th.

Lakewood Police found the little boy unresponsive in a Lakewood apartment Sept. 21. Police said a cord was wrapped around his neck.

Morales was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and child abuse.

Morales was arrested Sept. 22 after Lakewood Police said they received a call saying the boy had been missing shortly before noon Sept. 21.

Neighbors told 9NEWS about 20 minutes before Donny was found, his family was knocking on doors around the apartment complex, located in the 2500 block of South Sheridan Boulevard in Lakewood.

Donny was found in the apartment and rushed, unconscious, to the hospital. He was pronounced dead around 2 p.m.

Donny's mother and two other adults were in the apartment when he was found.
