Man gets 42 years for shooting woman, leaving her next to Dumpster

CENTENNIAL – A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 42 years in prison for shooting a 37-year-old woman and leaving her next to a Dumpster to die, according to a news release from the District Attorney's Office.

Isaac McCoy was convicted of second degree murder and tampering with evidence in May. He was sentenced on Thursday.

McCoy killed Umika Jones on Jan. 18, 2013 in the parking lot of the High Hollows Condominiums at 10772 E. Exposition Avenue.

Jones was at McCoy's uncle's house to buy crack, according to police. Once she got inside, she got into an argument over drugs and was thrown out of the apartment.

Witnesses told police that Jones shouted "They beat me, call the police!" from outside. That's when McCoy came out of the apartment with a gun and shot Jones twice in the head.

He then dragged her face-down across 48-feet of asphalt and left her beside the Dumpster to die. She succumbed to her injuries in minutes, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Witnesses told police that McCoy then changed clothes and tried to mop blood off of the stairs leading to the apartment. When police arrived, they say the apartment was wet and smelled like bleach.

During the trial, McCoy said he was acting in self-defense.

"These are unfathomable and inhumane acts for any person to commit and they are compounded by the fact that the defendant tried to cover up his cowardice by bleaching the scene," District Attorney George Brauchler said in a news release. "For his callous actions, it is only appropriate that the defendant spend much of the rest of his life in prison."
