Mom accused of using gun to settle teen dispute

DENVER – Denver Police say a 33-year-old woman tried to settle a dispute between two teenage girls by using a gun.

Court documents say the 14-year-old shooting victim was picking a fight with another teenager Sunday night before being shot in the arm.

Cherry Robertson, 33, is accused of shooting the 14-year-old neighbor, later identified as Niela Coleman. Robertson appeared in Denver court for the first time Monday morning. Robertson has been arrested for the investigation of attempted first-degree murder.

According to court documents, a 14-year-old girl, identified by witnesses as Robertson's daughter, was outside of her home Sunday night when police say Niela came over into her backyard and "began to pick on her trying to start a fight."

Niela told 9NEWS Crime and Justice Reporter Anastasiya Bolton she did not start the fight.

"I didn't even say anything. I didn't have a chance to say anything," Niela said. "I just got shot."

The police reports say Robertson came out of her apartment with a handgun Sunday and fired at Niela, hitting her in the shoulder. Court records indicate after firing the gun the first time, Robertson tried to fire again and chased Niela with it to the front of the building.

The details of the arrest reveal Robertson told officers she shot Niela and told them the gun was at her house.

"I didn't know her. She doesn't know me," Niela said. "I don't know why she shot me. I'm a kid. She's an adult. I didn't hit her daughter. She shot me for no reason."

The shooting happened Sunday night at around 8:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Rosemary Street, near 11th Avenue and Quebec Street.

Niela was taken to a nearby hospital, and she is expected to be OK.

A Colorado criminal background check on Robertson reveals she had a DUI arrest in March 2013.
