Murder suspect beaten in jail

BOULDER - One of the men arrested in the beating death of a developmentally-disabled man was assaulted while behind bars.

Austin Holford was in custody at the Boulder County Jail when his cellmate, Scott Benson, assaulted him according to the arrest report.

According to the report, Benson asked Holford if he was the "baseball bat kid." He said "yes."

Benson then tried to get his cellmate to fight him. After Holford refused, Benson reportedly rushed at him.

Benson hit Holford's head against the wall, punched him and smashed his head against the toilet.

When guards got to the cell, they saw Benson strangling Holford.

Benson is charged with second-degree assault and felony menacing.

Holford and Luke Pelham were charged with first-degree murder in the beating of Aaron Tuneberg. Court records say they took his bike, Xbox and an iPod speaker.

If convicted, the two could spend their lives in prison.
