DENVER -Three days after tragedy ripped the Kirk family apart, there are still few answers for those closest to them.

"This just isn't explainable," Richard Kirk's younger brother Lance Kirk said. "There are no words."

9NEWS spoke with Lance Thursday after he visited his brother in jail. Richard, 47, is being held without bond after being charged with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting his wife, 44-year-old Kris Kirk, Monday night.

Court documents obtained by 9NEWS indicate Richard may have taken a marijuana candy in combination with another medication. Kris called 911 to report that he was hallucinating. Lance says his brother Richard has been piecing it together ever since.

"He's hurting," Lance said. "He told me that he doesn't remember anything. The first thing he remembers is the cops were shining the lights in his face."

Lance says his brother was heavily involved in the Mormon Church and a devoted family man. He never saw any indication of violence in the home.

"He loved his kids, lived for his kids. He lived for his wife," he said. "He told me how much he loved her."

Lance is struggling with his brother being in jail and the loss of his sister-in-law. It's an indescribable pain for a family known for being so close.

"Kris was just an outstanding mother," Lance said. "She loved her kids."

Lance says the family is shifting its focus to caring for the three boys.

"This is the worst nightmare anybody could be in, and I'm just so sorry for what has happened," Lance said.

A fund has been launched to help support the children. Contributions can be made to the account set up by Kris's mother, Marti Kohnke, at US Bank.
