Officer fires weapon during arrest, no one hit

AURORA - A man is in custody and an officer is on leave after shots were fired during an arrest on Tuesday.

It happened at the 11600 block of Montview Boulevard around 1 p.m.

According to Diana Cooley, Aurora Police Department PIO, police were trying to take Michael Smith, 31, into custody when he brandished a handgun. 

At that time, an officer fired his weapon, but no one was hit.

Smith, however, was then tazed. He sustained injuries from the tasing, and was taken to the hospital. He's since been released.

Smith was wanted for a parole violation in connection with convictions of kidnapping and motor vehicle theft. New charges are pending. 

An investigation is underway, and the officer involved is now on paid administrative leave.
