Officer, suspect exchange gunfire after traffic stop in Denver: Police

Police are looking for a suspect believed to be involved in a shooting with a DPD officer after a traffic stop Saturday evening.

KUSA - Denver Police are out in force in the area of Stuart and Alameda Saturday night after an officer and a suspect exchanged fire, authorities say.

A DPD officer pulled over a car with two people inside on the 200 block of Stuart Street at 6:20 p.m., according to a law enforcement spokesperson. 

The driver got out and took off; the officer gave chase, Denver PD says.

Then, the driver started shooting at the officer and the officer returned fire, according to police. Authorities do not know if the suspect was hit.

The officer was not hurt, police say.

A perimeter has been set up around the area of the shooting as police continue to hunt for the suspect in the shooting. SWAT and a helicopter have been called in to help.

Police have a vague description of the suspect, but nothing specific.

The passenger stayed in the car and is in custody, according to police.
