PD: Wife shot by husband while on the phone with 911

DENVER – Denver Police arrested a husband accused of shooting and killing his wife Monday night.

Homicide detectives spent much of the night processing the scene in the 2100 block of South St. Paul Street in Denver.

Richard Kirk, 47, is being held for investigation of first-degree murder.

The woman, later identified as 44-year-old Kristine A. Kirk, called 911 and said her husband, Richard, was "talking about the end of the world and [saying] he wanted her to shoot him."

Kristine told dispatchers Kirk was hallucinating and was scaring their three, small children. She told the authorities that Richard may have ingested marijuana edibles. Kristine had called 911 because she was seeking medical attention for him.

9NEWS has learned that, as the woman was on the phone with 911, Richard allegedly became violent and got a gun out of the gun safe. The dispatcher heard a scream and then an apparent gunshot. Kristine was not heard on the call again. Police say Richard had shot her.

Kristine died on the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police don't have a history of responding to this home, according to 9NEWS' source.

Kristine was on the phone with dispatch for approximately 12 minutes before being shot, which is not an unreasonable time since her original call was not life-threatening.

According to Denver Police, any time a person dies while communication with Denver's emergency services, they examine the circumstances to ensure that the incident was handled properly and they look for areas to improve upon.

9NEWS has learned Richard has one prior arrest in Douglas County for driving under the influence and careless driving.

Richard has denied an interview request from 9NEWS. According to the police report, Richard admitted in the back of the patrol car, without questioning, that he killed his wife.
