THORNTON - Police are investigating the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl at a party in Thornton overnight.
At 1:40 a.m., officers were sent to Monaco Way and Krameria Street in response to a report of a disturbance and shots fired.
Officers found a girl lying in the street in the 13000 block of Monaco Way suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. She was transported to a local hospital where she died.
Family and friends identified the victim as Haley Vargas, 16.
Witnesses told police there was a "disturbance" at a house party in the 13000 Block of Monaco Way. The suspect allegedly shot the teen as he was leaving the home.
Alyssa Montoya says she discovered her best friend was shot to death on social media.
"She was just one of those kinds of people that was always happy and just smiling all the time, no matter what," Montoya said.
Vargas had big plans for the future and wanted a career in the medical field. The teen had a lot of experience in and out of hospitals, battling cancer in the form of Leukemia, according to Montoya.
"No one deserves this but out of everybody, why did it have to be her?" Vargas said in tears.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic man, in his late teens or early twenties with a skinny build and dark hair, 5 feet 6 inches tall with a gold hoop nose ring and glasses. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt.
He could also drive a red sedan.
