Sterling teens accused of killing grandparents

STERLING - Investigators have arrested a 19-year-old and his girlfriend on suspicion of murdering his grandparents in Sterling.

Brendan Johnson and his girlfriend, Cassandra Rieb, 18, both of Sterling, were arrested and both charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, forgery and theft.

Johnson and Rieb are suspected in the deaths of Charles and Shirley Severance, both 70. The Severances are Johnson's grandparents.

The body of Charles Severance was discovered in his home, located at 409 S. 3rd Ave., May 29. An autopsy showed no evidence of injury or trauma.

Police announced Tuesday that the remains of Shirley Severance were discovered near Sterling, with other remains found near Nebraska.

Police say the investigation indicates there are no other individuals involved in the crime and there continues to be no public safety threat. A motive for the murders were not released.

The Severences have lived in Colorado for 30 years.
