Toddler left alone in cabin died of dehydration

ROUTT COUNTY - A 3-year-old boy who died in late March in Steamboat Springs had a history of being left alone in a cabin without food or water, according to a Routt County Coroner's Office report.

Austin Davis died March 27 at an area hospital shortly after his mother, Megan McKeon, returned to the cabin where she had left him and found him unresponsive, according to investigators.

The coroner's report determined Davis' death was a homicide, and the result of complications due to dehydration.

The young boy's mother had a history of leaving him alone in the cabin without appropriate food, water or heat, according to the report.

The coroner's report says McKeon admitted to leaving Davis overnight in the cabin.

Investigators say the boy was left for more than 90 hours by himself with a movie playing.

McKeon has been charged with two counts of felony child abuse resulting in death.

She remains in custody with bond set at $250,000.
