Woman who gave gun to Ebel sentenced

DENVER - The woman who gave a presumed killer the murder weapon was sentenced Monday morning.

On Monday, a federal court judge sentenced 23-year-old Stevie Vigil to 27 months in prison. Following her prison term, Vigil was ordered to serve three years on supervised release.

Vigil pleaded guilty to buying a handgun used in the killing last year of corrections chief Tom Clements. On Monday, Vigil declined to speak in court. Her defense team argued Vigil did not know about Ebel's violent side.

She faced up to 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors say parolee Evan Ebel also used the gun to kill second man and wound a sheriff's deputy in Texas, where Ebel fled after Clements' death.

Ebel was killed in a shootout with Texas authorities. The judge has allowed Clements' widow, Lisa, and others to testify.

Clements was fatally shot when he answered the door of his Monument home March 19.

The judge said Ebl would have found a way to carry out his crimes if Vigil had not given him the gun.
