Security changes for the start of Denver Public Schools

DENVER - When students in the Denver Public School district return to class on Monday, they will see new security measures installed over the summer. They won't see a new emergency duress button.

At every building in the district, a duress button was placed in secret locations around the school. When pressed, it will automatically launch the lockdown protocol within the building and send a call for help to district security and Denver Police.

Three schools in the district are delaying their first day because of construction.

West Generation and West Leadership – both of which are on the West High School campus – will start on Aug. 27 rather than Aug. 25.

Denver Public Schools said renovations are coming down to the wire, which is the reason for the delay.

Bromwell Elementary School is also delaying the start of school until Wednesday. Bromwell is located on the Denver School of Science and Technology campus.
