Social media rumor causes increased police presence at schools

DOUGLAS COUNTY - Douglas County Schools says there will be extra law enforcement in some schools Monday after social media rumors of a threat were circulated.

The rumors involved Castle View and Douglas high schools. Police say the threat is not credible, but will have more law enforcement at the schools as a precaution.

Police do not know when or where the threat originated.

This note was sent home to parents and guardians:

Dear DCSD Families,

We are reaching out to you today to share information regarding some rumors that are circulating this morning.  As you know, any possible threat is taken seriously here at the Douglas County School District.

A few of our schools in Castle Rock recently received information about a concerning post on social media. The DCSD Security team, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Castle Rock Police Department quickly responded and immediate steps were taken to ensure student safety.

The Douglas County Sheriff Office investigation revealed this was not a credible threat to our schools. We are dedicated to protect students daily with our School Resource Officers and the School Marshals. As a precautionary measure law enforcement has additionally increased patrols in and around all of our schools in Castle Rock.

We have learned that similar rumors are affecting school districts across Colorado, which is why we are notifying all DCSD parents.

In these situations it is very important for us, as a community to avoid sharing rumors, which may create unwarranted concern.
As always, if there is a credible concern or threat to a school or community, we will notify our parents immediately. We encourage anyone who hears of a potential threat,  to contact their school administrator, District Security or local law enforcement.

Thanks for your continued involvement and support.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

Sincerely,

DCSD Community Relations
